“At General Sleep we feel it’s important to trace our process from start to finish,” the company says.
Fashion industry veterans Bailey Meredith and Greta Van der Star founded General Sleep in 2017. The New Zealand brand makes classic soft-to-skin pyjamas so flattering they can be worn in bed or in the streets. The company also offers hand-loomed fabrics made by a community of traditional artisan weavers.
True to their word, General Sleep pass their products through the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification process to ensure the quality of the fabric and fair working conditions for growers.
From the get-go, General Sleep aimed to make products that would customers can buy without worry. In their quest for the perfect pj set, they discovered a unique blend of organic cotton and linen. General Sleep also sells 100% organic cotton jammies for those who prefer a crisp, structured feel in bed.
General Sleep remains true to its minimalist and sustainable ethos as it slowly expands its offering with new fabrics, colours and styles without ever falling into the fast fashion track. “Our designs are classic and functional and we feel they do not need to be reinvented every few months. It’s like finding your favourite pair of jeans or T-shirt: they’re timeless and you just want the same again,” the founders told Ensemble Magazine.
